Reasons You Should Buy A Quality Towbar, Not A Cheap One

As a family, we love to drive off and go camping for weekends, or weeks at a time. We mostly keep it really simple, a tent, sleeping bags and a car full of provisions. Last year though, for a change, we decided to rent a caravan and do it that way. Not having a towbar on the jeep, I clearly needed to get one installed.

With this in mind, I took the jeep down to the professionals at All Vehicle Accessories (AVA) to get a towbar installed. Initially I wanted the cheapest model I could find, the less I spent here, the more I could spend on the caravan. I am glad I talked to the guys though, in their experience they showed me the folly of my ways.

To begin with, they got me thinking about the types of things I wanted to tow. Obviously there was the caravan for the upcoming trip. Following on from that though, I’d probably buy some bike beaks too as my wife loves triathlons. We could take the bikes up to the Dandenongs for a ride.

They then showed me the value of the objects I was going to be towing. To start with, my bike is a bit of a cheapie. I only spent about $800 on it. My wife’s though, well given her passion for triathlon training, she spent over $3000 for hers.

I ended up Googling caravan sales to get a feel for how much they are to buy. I didn’t realise they were so expensive. I couldn’t find anything for less than $5000 and I found quite a few which cost more than $100,000. You can buy property for that much… The one we rented was mid range, costing around $50,000 new. Its quite a “load” on the towbar when you think about it in those terms.

I was convinced. I had to change my attitude toward this towbar. If I was going to pay the money regardless, I may as well have it done properly. Instead of finding a cheap towbar, I realised I needed to find a quality towbar. Paying the few extra dollars didn’t matter anymore, when taken in perspective with the items being towed.

The AVA professionals pointed out to me that the Hayman Reese towbars are the only brand in Australia which carries a lifetime guarantee. This I thought was pretty telling, especially as quality was now the issue. I was almost sold. These particular towbars though had two additional features which absolutely convinced me.

To start with, they have a Weight Distribution Hitch which will take the extra money you spent on the towbar and hitch, and put it right back into your pocket with fuel savings. That’s right, it makes the trailer work better with your vehicle. It does this by reducing the ball weight on the towbar and therefore drag. Less drag means your vehicle drives easier, giving it better efficiency and a lower consumption of fuel. Sometimes you just need to spend a bit to save.

The other thing they sell is an accessory called Sway Control. This one I definitely wanted as it makes towing so much safer. Given that my family are going to be in the vehicle with me as we drive on our holiday, safety really is my first priority. Sway control is simply the add on that stops the caravan from swerving all over the road, every time a truck drives past the other way. A very nifty accessory which makes for a much safer trip.

I have to thank the guys at AVA for their help on this one. They gave me perspective, an understanding that finding the cheapest towbar is probably not the cheapest way to tow and ensured my tow set up was as safe as it could be. What more could you ask for?

Winter Vacations in Disney World

The majority of those visiting Disney World do so in the summer. The reason for this is pretty simple, that`s when people have vacations and the kids are out of school. There are some great advantages to hitting the happiest place on earth during the winter months, though.

Since the majority of vacationers won`t be hanging around the parks until spring, you`ll be able to walk right onto rides, often with only a couple minutes of waiting. Not only does this mean you get to ride more often, it also lets you see a lot more in a shorter amount of time.

The weather in Florida is warm year round, so you don`t need to worry about a winter vacation being too chilly. In fact, many prefer winter in Florida because it`s cooler than the summer months, making walking all over the parks a far easier task and much more comfortable.

It`s often worth taking the kids out of school for a few days to enjoy the relative peace of the parks during this season. You`ll find that you`ll have even less competition for rides and events if you hit the parks on a major holiday, such as Thanksgiving, when everyone is celebrating at home. The parks are still running and will be virtually empty!

Another fun part of visiting in the winter is that you`ll get to see the seasonal shows. For example, there are Christmas parades that you wouldn`t be able to see at any other point during the year. These are definitely worth watching and won`t be available during the summer months.

You may also find hotel rooms are cheaper at this time of year, since there are fewer tourists in the area. Look online for discounts ahead of time to get the best deals and you can end up staying very near Disney for a fraction of summer prices.

Planning Your Winter Vacation Remember that during the low season is when rides are often under construction, so if there is one that you particularly want to visit, check first to make sure it will be running when you arrive. Planning ahead will make your vacation easier and ensure that it runs smoothly.

Buying park hopper tickets is your best bet, no matter when you go. These allow you to jump between the four Disney World parks and stay at one for more than one day, should you choose. Regular Disney World tickets will only let you visit one park on the specified day and don`t allow for changes in plans. You may find that you`ve had enough of the Animal Kingdom after half a day and park hopper tickets will let you head to one of the other parks for the afternoon, if you wish.

By planning your trip early, you`ll be able to make the most of discounts on everything from plane tickets and hotel rooms to rental cars and park tickets. Winter Driving Preparation

Depending on what area of the country you live in, the start of the winter season can bring with it a whole host of concerns when it comes to your automobile. Poor driving conditions and frigid conditions may literally leave you stuck out in the cold if you aren’t properly prepared to deal with them.

Get your car a “Check-Up”

The absolute best way to ensure that you?re prepared to handle the weather ahead is to have your car checked out by a licensed mechanic. You?ll want a tune up, all your fluid levels checked, your battery tested and all your belts and hoses inspected. Sub freezing temperatures can further shorten the lives of worn down batteries and the less than perfect pliable materials that your belts and hoses are made of. A dead battery or broken belt is a great way to end up freezing your rear end off on the side of the road while you wait for roadside assistance.

Make sure your tires are in good condition and properly balanced as well – it?s no fun at all having to change a flat on the side of the road while you?re knee deep in snow and slush and the sun is going down.

Be Prepared

There are certain things that you should always have in your car in case of an emergency, like a small tool kit including the necessary items to change a flat, some small hand tools, a flashlight and a roll of duct tape; you should also have a fully stocked first aid kit and some flares in case of a night time emergency. These things become even more important to have handy in the event of extremely cold temperatures or the threat of heavy snow. In the spring and summer you can wait comfortably for help to arrive, but in zero degree temperatures you may find yourself with a nasty case of frost bite if you can?t get your car operational and help is a long way away. In addition to your normal tools and first aid kit you should also pack a couple of nice heavy blankets into your trunk in the event that you do have to wait in the cold for help to arrive

Tire chains are another possibility (or necessity depending upon where you live), that can be extremely helpful for winter travel. There are several types of chains available, which can cause some confusion but your mechanic should have no trouble suggesting a set that will work well in your particular area. Sets of chains may vary quite a bit in cost, but it?s probably not the best idea to scrimp and save on something that may save your life should you get stuck in the snow.

Be Cautious

Many people fail to pay attention to speed limits, construction signs or the many other laws of the road. Some of those people are lucky enough to get through their travels without causing or being involved in an accident, but the nasty conditions of winter weather can drastically increase the chances of being involved in an accident. When driving in less than favorable conditions you need to slow down and take every precaution in order to stay safe and keep those around you safe. Winter weather decreases visibility and makes roadways slippery and more difficult to navigate, these things coupled with even the slightest bit of negligent behavior is a sure recipe for disaster.

It’s true that driving in winter weather conditions is more risky than driving in perfect weather, but you can minimize the likelihood of having problems by following the steps detailed above. If you are prepared and cautious and have your car checked out fully by a good mechanic you give yourself an excellent chance of having problem free travels regardless of the outside conditions.
