Mazda RX-7 The Rotary Engine Sports Car

The Mazda RX-7 is a sports car that was produced in Japan beginning in’78 and ending in 2002. The most unique feature of the car was its featuring of a rotary or Wankel engine. The RX-7 was a replacement for the RX-3 and eventually was the only rotary engine vehicle produced by Mazda other than the Cosmo.

The Wankel engine in the first RX-7 was only 1150 cc. It was a twin rotor engine and the car was rear wheel drive. The Wankel engine was invented in Germany, however Mazda was one of the few auto manufacturers to successfully use the rotary engine. The increased fuel consumption of the rotary engine caused the company some problems in the oil crisis of the’70s.

Rotary engines are lighter in weight that other gasoline engines. They can be built from aluminum and are popular in use of air craft, but their use in land vehicles has been very limited. Mazda owners often brag about the smooth running rotary engines.

The third generation RX-7 was introduced in’92 and sales of the RX-7 were halted in the United States in’95, with only a limited number of vehicles being sent to the United States in that year, although the vehicle continued to be sold in other parts of the world.

The RX-8 has been introduced by Mazda to replace the RX-7. The RX-8 was first seen in car shows in 2001 but not sold in the United States until 2004. Standard equipment in the RX-8 are seating for four. Mazda continues to use the rotary engine in the RX-8.
