If you crank your engine and experience a hard start, there’s a good chance the problem involves your spark plugs. They are responsible for igniting the air-fuel mixture within your engine’s cylinders. Unfortunately, they become fouled over time. Constant exposure to the combustion process results in a buildup of deposits on the plugs that eventually prevents them from delivering a sufficient spark. They need to be changed in order to maintain the efficient operation of your engine. Otherwise, you’ll experience misfires, difficulty accelerating, a rough idle, and poor gas mileage.

Fortunately, changing your spark plugs is easy. If you have the right tools, you should be able to change a set of four plugs in less than an hour. With a little experience, you may be able to do so in half the time. This article will provide step-by-step details to walk you through the process.

Step 1: Gather The Tools For The Job

Before you get started, make sure you have everything you need within reach. Besides the replacement spark plugs, you’ll need a ratchet wrench, plug socket, and socket extensions. You should also have lubrication to grease the plugs’ threads as well as a gapping tool (though the gapping tool is optional). Lastly, it’s a good idea to use protective goggles since debris can become airborne and pose a danger to your eyes.

Step 2: Locate The Plugs And Remove The Wires

Lift the hood of your vehicle and find the thick hoses sprawled across the top of your engine. At the end of each hose, you’ll find a spark plug. In a typical 4-cylinder engine, the plugs are located along the top of the assembly and positioned in a straight line. They’re very easy to access. On a typical 8-cylinder configuration, the plugs are positioned on the sides of the engine. They are more difficult to reach, but still doable.

Because the cylinders follow a specific firing order, remove the plug wires one at a time. If you remove all of the wires at once, you’ll risk reinserting them incorrectly. Grab each wire at the base and pull upward.

Step 3: Take Out The Old Plugs

After you have removed the first plug wire, grab your ratchet wrench. Attach the socket extension and plug socket onto it and fit the socket over the spark plug. It should form a snug fit. Turn the ratchet to unscrew the plug from its slot.

Step 4: Install The Replacement Plugs

When installing the replacement spark plug, be careful. Avoid pushing or forcing the plug into the slot since doing so can damage the threads and the new plug. Simply position it in the slot and screw it in by hand. If you feel resistance, unscrew the plug to reposition it, and then start over. Once the replacement spark plug has been screwed in as far as it will go by hand, use the ratchet wrench to finish the job. The plug should fit firmly in place.

Next, attach the plug wire to the replacement spark plug and double-check the connection before moving on to the next plug.

Step 5: Crank The Engine To Test The Installation

If you have completed the steps as described for each plug, you should be able to start your car with no problem. Turn the key and test your installation. If your engine idles roughly or misfires immediately upon starting your car, that’s a sign you have installed the plug wires out of firing order. You’ll need to confirm the order (you can find the information online), review your installation, and make any necessary changes.

Plan to replace your spark plugs every 40,000 to 50,000 miles. Even if you suspect they’re in good condition, it’s better to replace them than wait for them to become fouled and ineffective. They’re inexpensive, which makes a set of replacements a wise investment.

Where Are They Installed?

Long ago, the bags were only installed in the steering wheel and instrument panel (for the driver and front passenger, respectively). While these locations are still used today, automakers also install them elsewhere. Knee bags may be installed within the lower instrument panel; side bags might be installed in the seat, door, or roof of the vehicle. These are designed to protect the car’s occupants from being injured from a side collision since such collisions may harm those who are wearing seat belts.

How Do They Work?

Both frontal and side airbags work in a similar manner. As noted earlier, sensors constantly monitor the vehicle, and send data to a control module. The control module decides whether current conditions justify deployment. If it determines the impact of an accident is sufficiently severe to pose injury to the car’s occupants, it triggers the mechanism that fills the airbags with gas.

Frontal bags, when they deploy, inflate to varying degrees. Much depends on the speed the vehicle is traveling, size and position of the occupant, and whether the occupant is wearing his or her seat belt. Depending on these factors, the bags inflate with a variable level of pressure and power.

The main differences with side airbags are that they are deployed more quickly and at a lower severity threshold. The reason is because a car’s occupants are seated more closely to the windows and doors than the windshield. Thus, during a side collision, the potential for injury is higher.

Are They Dangerous?

Airbags can cause injury, though such incidents are rare. The force of the bags’ deployment, when combined with the forward motion of a car’s occupant, can result in lacerations, bruises, or worse. The problem was more prevalent during the early 1990s, however. Since then, automakers have depowered their respective systems to minimize the threat of harm.

Have Airbags Caused Fatalities?

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there have been nearly 300 deaths attributable to frontal airbags between 1990 and 2008. The NHTSA study goes further to clarify that 90 percent of the fatalities were young children who were either unbelted or positioned improperly in car seats. As mentioned above, automakers have made changes to their deployment systems to reduce – and potentially, eliminate – the danger.

To date, the NHTSA has been unable to confirm any fatalities attributable to side airbags. This is likely because side bags are smaller, and deploy with much less force.

Can The System Be Turned Off?

Yes, for now. Automakers currently install airbags in their vehicles with an on-off switch. This switch allows drivers the flexibility to disengage the feature if they feel it poses excessive risk. This is primarily relevant to drivers who suffer certain health conditions. The federal government has mandated, however, that by September 2012, airbags must be installed without the on-off switch.

A Guide To Replacing Your Vehicle’s Radiator

The internal combustion process that occurs within your engine’s cylinders generates an enormous amount of heat. If this heat were left unattended, it would quickly cause damage to the assembly. Your radiator helps to control the heat. It keeps the temperature from rising above a certain point, so your engine can continue to operate efficiently. Coolant flows through the engine and absorbs heat before returning to the radiator. There, small fins allow the heat to dissipate. The newly-cooled coolant then returns to your engine to repeat the process.

Like all components, the radiator will eventually need to be replaced if you keep your vehicle long enough. If your mechanic performs the job, you’ll need to spend up to $500 for the replacement assembly, new coolant, and the labor (the job requires two to three hours). That said, replacing the part yourself is easier than you might think. We’ll take you through the entire process below.

Your Radiator, Piece By Piece

First, it’s important to identify each of the parts you’ll be working with. The assembly itself is located at the front of your car, truck, or SUV. On its topside, you’ll see the cap that covers the hole in which you add coolant. You’ll also notice holder brackets near the top corners; these secure the component in place.

A radiator hose connects the top of the assembly with a section of housing in which a thermostat is located. The thermostat’s job is to manage the engine’s temperature, which it accomplishes by controlling the flow of coolant between the two assemblies.

Your radiator may appear a little differently when compared to the description above. Most are similar, though. Once you have identified the individual pieces, you’ll need to drain the fluid. As a side note, it’s a good idea to remove the battery cables from the posts. Doing so will prevent a short.

Drain The Coolant

Take a look at the assembly from the ground up. You’ll see a valve located on its underside. In order to drain the coolant, you’ll need to loosen this valve. Before you do so, however, make sure you have a pan or container situated underneath to catch the old coolant. Depending on your vehicle, there may be a plastic shield covering the valve; if so, you’ll need to remove it.

Draining the coolant from the radiator will likely take several minutes. Wait until it has drained completely before disconnecting the hoses.

Disconnect The Hoses And Mounts

Start with the hoses on the underside of the assembly. They will likely be secured in place with clamps; if so, you’ll need to remove the clamps with a pair of pliers before disconnecting the hoses. Also, look for mounts along the base of the component near the corners. They will need to be unfastened. Once the clamps, hoses, and mounts on the bottom of the radiator have been removed, you’ll need to do the same along the top.

You’ll find mounting brackets near the corners on top of the assembly. They’ll be held in place with bolts, which need to be removed prior to removing the brackets.

Extract And Replace The Assembly

At this point, all connections between the radiator and other components have been removed. You should be able to simply lift the assembly out of its cavity. Before you do so, however, take another look to verify there are no remaining connections that might prevent its removal. Then, lift the radiator out, set it aside, and prepare to install its replacement.

Installation of the new radiator is simple. Follow the steps used to remove the old one in reverse order. If you’re using the cooling fans from the original model, install and test them to ensure the motor works properly. Then, drop the new assembly into the vacant cavity, connect the hoses and clamps, and replace the mounts (don’t forget those on the bottom). Replenish the coolant and check to make sure the level is sufficient.

Replacing your car’s radiator can be time-consuming and labor-intensive, especially if you lack experience working on cars. That said, the job is simple, and thus can be completed successfully without paying a mechanic’s hefty repair bill.

Adaptive Cruise Control: The Evolution Of Cruising

Back in the’50s, Chrysler introduced a feature into their automobiles that allowed drivers to set the speed at which they were driving. Rather than having to actively watch their speedometer and make continuous adjustments, motorists could program the system to maintain a defined speed. There was one problem: the feature could not identify the distance between the driver’s vehicle and objects that lay in front of him. Placing too much trust in the system often resulted in rear-end traffic collisions.

Automakers have developed a new version of the traditional feature: adaptive cruise control (ACC). Below, you’ll discover how the technology works and the advantages it offers. We’ll also take a brief look at what the future holds for ACC.

How Does Adaptive Cruise Control Work?

The newer system not only allows drivers to set a defined speed, but it also keeps track of objects that lie in their path. That includes other cars, pedestrians, and stationary objects. The feature is programmed to maintain a specific “safe distance” between the driver’s vehicle and everything else. When it identifies a need, the ACC will moderate the throttle and apply the brakes.

There are a couple ways in which adaptive cruise control can monitor the landscape in front of the driver. The first is by using microwave radar. The second is to rely upon cameras that are positioned at the front of the vehicle. When either technology identifies a potential hazard, it will calculate the speed and distance required to maintain the motorist’s safety.
