It’s a cold morning and you have forgotten to plug inside your block heater. Or maybe it is a lovely morning, but you left your lights on more than night. What ever the cause, the outcome is the exact same. A sickening, half-hearted pretty much turnover when you change the key, or maybe a clicking noise, as well as just lifeless silence.

If the lights and radio will not turn on, or dim when you make an effort to start off the vehicle, you pretty much definitely possess a dead battery. Luckily, you have jumper cables inside your trunk, plus a willing friend or neighbour, and, most importantly, you realize tips on how to bounce start a auto.

Begin by parking the vehicles as near together as possible without touching. Neither vehicle should be operating once you start the leap starting process. Fortunately, this can be something you only require to keep in mind for the boosting car or truck, as the automobile using the dead battery power takes care of this action alone.

All through the course of action, the booster cables must never be allowed to touch themselves, the ground, o anything damp or metal. The interior lights, the headlights, and also the radio must all be disengaged within the vehicle getting leap started out before you commence, also. Most importantly, if the battery is frozen, cracked, leaking, or otherwise damaged, do not make an effort to boost the car. The battery power could explode.

Start by hooking up the booster cables to the stay auto, very first the good (red) cable clamp to the matching battery power posts, then the bad (black) cable clamp. Then repeat the method for the car getting boosted. Particularly in warm weather, it can be a good thought to attach the ground clamp (the black, or bad clamp) to one thing other than the unfavorable electric battery post.

What ever you attach it to must be metal, clean, and unpainted. This way, when there is a spark for the ignition with the dead car or truck, it will not be near the battery, which could have flammable vapours around it.

As soon as the jumper cables are properly attached, look at starting the car or truck. Inmost cases, it’ll roar right to life. If it does not, you can leave it for a little bit to charge and attempt once again, or it is possible to get a ride towards the shop to buy a fresh electric battery.

What Should I do if I am Stopped for Drunk Driving?

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Almost everyone has been stopped by law enforcement at one time or another for a traffic violation. Whether the stop is for something as simple as a burned out headlight, or you didn’t come to a complete stop, we all know that feeling when we see the flashing lights in our rear-view mirror. Imagine how much worse that feeling is when you have had a little too much to drink. Every day I meet with people who have been charged with traffic violations and drunk driving offenses. As I explain to a client their rights, one of the comments I hear most is, I wish I had known that when I was stopped.

Many people are under-educated about their rights, or even misinformed about the law and what decisions they should make when they are stopped for a traffic offense. Many people think they should just do whatever the police officer tells them to do because they don’t have any other options. Below is a basic list of things to keep in mind when you are stopped for drunk driving or driving under the influence of drugs. Laws will vary from state to state, and the following list is Colorado specific. Please check with a local attorney about the laws in your state.

1. You have the right to remain silent. You do not need to answer any questions the police ask you about where you were going, why they stopped you, or how much you have had to drink. Even from their very first contact, the police are trying to build a case against you. Always be polite with the officer, but do not make any statements about what happened, how much you have had to drink, or any other violation they are investigating.

After you provide the officer your drivers license, insurance and registration, your best advice is to keep your mouth shut. When the officer stops you he is looking for any clue that you may be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Even if you answer innocuous questions, the officer is looking for clues when you talk such as the smell of alcohol on your breath, or slow/slurred speech.

One of the officers first questions is always, How much have you had to drink tonight? Some of the most common answers to this question are, two beers, or, I had a couple with dinner. Many people erroneously believe that if they minimize their use it wont look as bad, but by admitting to alcohol use you are helping law enforcement build a case against you.

2. Do not take any roadside sobriety tests. Roadside sobriety tests are voluntary. These tests are used to help the officer determine if you are under the influence and can be used at trial and at the Department of Revenue/Motor Vehicle hearing against you. Do not provide the police with any additional evidence that can bolster their case. These tests often include eye tests, walk and turn, one leg stand, alphabet or counting tests.

This includes any preliminary breath tests (PBT) at the scene of the stop. The results of the PBT are not admissible in Court in Colorado because they are not as accurate as other chemical tests. However, the police use these tests to confirm their suspicion that you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and to build their case against you for further tests that are admissible in Court.

3. If you do not take the mandatory chemical test, you could lose your license. In Colorado, if you do not take the mandatory chemical test of your breath or blood as is required under express consent laws, you will lose your license for a year in addition to any other license suspension imposed. The mandatory chemical tests include a blood test, a breath test or urinalysis. The mandatory breath test is different from the PBT, and is typically done on a large machine at the police station after an observation period is completed under strict regulations. If you don’t know if a test is required under the law, ask the officer. In many cases you would be best advised to submit to a chemical test of your blood. In Colorado, a second sample will be taken of your blood. This second sample is available to you to be tested at an independent lab. In many cases this second result can come back lower, or so different from the first test as to cast doubt onto the result of either test. These results can be used to your advantage in plea negotiations and at trial.

If you refuse chemical testing you can still be charged with drunk driving. Many people believe that if they don’t submit to a test, then the government will not be able to pursue a case against you for drunk driving. Prosecutors may still use all other evidence they obtained against you such as bad driving, smell of alcohol, visual clues of intoxication, roadsides tests, and even the fact that you refused the test can be used against you in Court.

4. You have a limited time to request a Department of Motor Vehicles/Department of Revenue hearing. If you are above the legal limit of a .08 BAC in Colorado two proceedings will begin against you, 1) the criminal process, and 2) the DMV/DOR process. Although the criminal process can carry hefty penalties such as fines, jail, community service, and alcohol classes, the DMV only has the power to suspend or revoke your driving privileges. You may say, Only? My ability to drive is a huge deal. That is why it is so important to request a DMV hearing before the time runs and the suspension automatically goes into effect.

In the state of Colorado, you have seven days from the date of the results of the breath test to request a hearing or your license will automatically be revoked. For a blood test, the procedure is a little different. Whereas the results of a breath test are immediate it often takes a few weeks for blood results to come back from the lab. If you were above a .08 the police will forward your results to the DMV, and you will receive a notice via mail. This letter will have all instructions on how to request a hearing and a deadline by which the hearing must be requested. Whether you chose a breath test or blood test, you should request a hearing as soon as possible so you can explore all legal and factual defenses at the DMV/DOR hearing to protect your driving privileges.

When you request the hearing you will receive a temporary license that is valid until the date of the hearing. Remember, if you don’t request the hearing you will automatically lose your license. In many situations there is a legal or factual defense that can save your license if the proper arguments are presented at the hearing.

5. Hire an experienced Drunk Driving lawyer as soon as possible. A drunk driving case presents many highly complex legal and procedural issues. A plea or a conviction to a drunk driving charge can have lasting implications on your life, your license, and your freedom. It can also have many unforeseen consequences as well. An experienced drunk driving defense attorney will advise you at all stages of your case of potential pitfalls and other issues as they may arise in your case.

A Drunk driving defense lawyer will review your case for all legal and factual deficiencies in the governments case against you to help you present your best defense. The old saying that only a fool represents himself could not be more true. The earlier you hire an attorney, the better, so as to avoid making any costly mistakes early in the case.

The Versatility Of Caravan Insurance

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

The 1970’s rock band Caravan once released a rather oddly titled album called “For Girls Who Go Plump In The Night” which, let’s be honest, isn’t the kind of thing you’d expect to read in an article about caravan insurance, even if the writer owns one (a caravan that is!) An insurance man in a caravan is perhaps not that strange, but an insurance man in a caravan listening to Caravan? No way!

Although I’m not entirely sure why I start thinking about this, I’m pretty sure it’s because I was looking back at some photos of last year’s Glastonbury festival the other day and I noticed just how many caravans were there in one get-up or another. Being an insurance man, I was of course thinking about the cover they had and whether or not the underwriters knew exactly what they were being used for.

Caravans were being used for almost everything you can think of that needs a sturdy shelter, i.e. people were living in them, some were being used as resting places for tired musicians, some were being used for paid showers and some were being used shops by refreshment vendors, and I still mean proper caravans, not mobile catering units.

In the camping areas there were caravans being used as shelter from the rain for the security staff, as meeting points for lost festival goers and as weekend homes for ageing rockers who either could no longer handle the rough nights of tent camping, or who just happened be fellow caravan fans.

Some of the bands use caravans too of course. Great big ones with one extra wheel at the front for steering the things for a start. They use them for changing in, partying in and well, all of the other things that bands do although I’m not certain that Caravan ever used one, that’s too good to be true isn’t it? Caravan in a caravan listening to their debut album (yes that’s right called “Caravan”). Perhaps they even went along with their friends in a convoy – a caravan of caravans including a caravan with Caravan in it listening to Caravan!

Anyway as I said, I started thinking about whether or not they had the correct insurance cover and let’s face it, they probably didn’t did they? If you’re thinking about taking your caravan along to a festival this year it’s worth thinking about proper insurance. A caravan can get damaged by careless fellow festival goers, it can slide off of its own accord into the mud, they can get flooded inside, catch fire, get blown away and, well, almost anything can happen. Luckily you can insure your caravan against most things – even collisions with uninsured caravans being used as tea shops!

Coversure are leading providers of caravan insurance if you are thinking about taking your caravan anywhere where it would be even remotely at risk, you should think about looking into some caravan insurance just to be safe.

Car Maintenance Tips For Those Who Know Nothing About Cars

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

Modern cars are significantly more complex than their counterparts from the 1960’s and 1970’s, and working on them is an even more specialized discipline. The modern mechanic needs a laptop computer as much as he needs a tool box, and for this reason even those with a decent aptitude for working on engines are opting to have their repairs done by a professional. Still, there are a number of simple car maintenance steps that anyone can do. These simple tasks will go a long way toward preventing trouble which saves you time and money as well as resulting in a safer driving experience.

–A clean car is a happy car: The outside of your car isnt as important as whats under the hood, but it is still important. In addition to the aesthetic benefits of a clean car theres a number of practical matters it addresses. Keeping your windshield clean inside and out is crucial for safety. Keeping the rest of the car clean prevents rust and corrosion.. And when youre cleaning your car, dont forget.

–Wash underneath your car: Washing the undercarriage of your car is a good idea in any case, and downright essential if you live where it snows a lot. The salt, sand and other chemicals used for snow removal collect underneath your vehicle and will cause rust damage faster than anything else. Even during the winter, its important to wash your car at least once a week paying special attention to the wheel wells and undercarriage.

–Wash your engine: Not only is your engine subject to the same ‘threats’ as the exterior and undercarriage of your car, it also collects crusty oil, battery acid and a variety of other contaminants. Keeping your engine clean will not only protect against corrosive damage, but will help your car run cooler and more efficiently. Wash your engine every time you wash your car, and let it idle before you start driving to allow it to dry completely.

–Clean your air filter: Change your filter every time you change your oil filter. In between changes, give the filter a good spray with a compressed air hose and blow out the filter chamber as well. Filters are so cheap that you have no excuse to be running around with a dirty one.

–Check and change your oil: Check the dipstick level every time you stop for gas, and don’t run your car without the appropriate amount of oil. An older vehicle may burn oil, but if you have a new car that is burning oil it needs to be checked out. Change your oil frequently”at least every 5,000 miles and better still, every 3,000 miles. Change your filter when you change the oil or youre going to be pumping clean oil through a dirty filter which defeats the purpose. Oil changes are a pretty easy job even for those without much of a mechanical background, and drive thru oil change businesses are ubiquitous in any decent sized market. Most of these places do a decent job and charge a reasonable fee. Many also take care of several other of the maintenance tasks on this list.

–Check other fluids: Change your anti-freeze/coolant every year, and check the reservoir every week or so to make sure it’s full. Also check transmission, brake and power steering fluids at least once a week. Top them off if necessary.

–Check your air pressure and rotate your tires: Check your air pressure levels with a tire gauge at least once a week, keeping them filled to manufacturer specified levels. Also, don’t forget about the spare. Rotate your tires every few months to insure even wear. Some automotive chains will do this free of charge if you’re a regular customer, but even if you’re not it’s a lot easier for them to do with the car up on the rack than for you to do with a jack and jack stand. Simply checking the air pressure in your tires and rotating them periodically prevents countless problems and saves you a ton of money.

Emergency tools and equipment: Despite your best efforts to the contrary, things will eventually go wrong. When in does, youll be glad that you planned ahead. These items should be in your trunk at all times: tire gauge, pliers (slip-joint and needle nose), adjustable wrench, flat head and Phillips screwdriver. Dont buy cheap tools”theyll break and the least opportune times. Invest in Craftsman tools or another premium brand, and youll be set for life. Youll also need a flashlight, and if you live somewhere it snows its also a good idea to have salt, sand, a small shovel, and a blanket just in case you get snowbound and have to sleep in your car. A cellphone charger is also a good thing to have, since a cellphone doesn’t do much good if your batteries are dead. There are also ‘emergency’ cellphone chargers that don’t require a power source.

–Get an auto club membership: An auto club at a minimum should give you free towing, trip continuation insurance, lockout service, free maps, and some other bells and whistles. AAA is the best known, but there are countless others provided by credit card companies, cellphone providers, banks, etc. Shop around and find the best deal for the services you need. A growing number of car manufacturers also include lifetime roadside assistance, and not just luxury brands–Mini Cooper and Volkswagen offer new car buyers 24 hour roadside assistance free of charge. Also, ask about the size of their provider network. In a decent sized city you’ll be fine but if you live or frequently travel in less populated areas you might want to stick to AAA or another major company. There’s nothing more infuriating that learning that your auto club doesn’t have providers in Mesquite, Nevada or Vernal, Utah.

These tips require any real mechanical skill, but will enhance your driving experience. You’ll have a safer, better running vehicle that will be more dependable and cost you less money over the long haul.

Tips On Smooth International Car Rental Transactions

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

When you are renting a car it is typically a simple process. You start out by obtaining quotes online or on the telephone, you then decide on which deal is best, next you make your rental reservation and lastly you arrive at the rental company and pick up your vehicle. This is a very simple and straight forward process, however if you are traveling internationally there are a few additional steps that you will need to take in order to rent your car for the visit.

To start with you may be required to obtain an international driving permit in order to rent a vehicle at an overseas destination. This permit is not always required for your international travel rental, but it is mandatory by many other countries. If required, your international driving permit needs to be obtained prior to leaving your country, therefore you will want to look into this several weeks in advance to ensure that if the permit is required you have enough time to get the documentation and paperwork together. In addition to needing an international driving permit, many countries also require that you have a valid drivers license so you will want to be sure that you have both documents on you when you go to pick up your rental.

Next you need to find out if the country you are visiting requires an international insurance card, as proof that you are insured while driving your rental internationally. This is usually required for all international rental cars, so what you really need to do is contact your insurance company and inform them that you are in need of this documentation. Many insurance companies are regionally located so the insurance card that you receive will let the rental company know that you are a carrier of valid insurance, therefore you are eligible to rent your vehicle. Much like the international driving permit, you will be required to obtain this form in your home country, so you will want to check with your rental company several weeks prior to your visit to ensure you have enough time to obtain the required documentation.

While traveling internationally it is also a wise idea to go with a reputable company that you are familiar with. Since many of the same rental companies from the United States are located around the world this should not be a hard task. Once you have reserved your rental you should then include anything additional that you will need while driving. Many companies offer child safety seats, car racks, GPS devices and other travel necessities, to their customers. These items should be reserved way in advance of your arrival as there is often a limited supply on hand. Another good idea is to always rent a GPS, if they are available. This will not only assist you with traveling on the unfamiliar roads, it will also assist in finding emergency services, gas locations and other areas that you may be in need of while traveling.

International car rentals will go more smoothly if you arrange everything in advance and line up the paperwork you will need prior to your travel. This will ensure that when you arrive you can sign the paperwork and quickly be on your way.

Lotus Exige Scura

Sunday, November 1st, 2009

While a majority of automakers are bailing out of the Tokyo Motor Show, it is nice to see that there will indeed be a few new models to look at when it comes to be show time. One such vehicle will be a special edition sports car from he light weight English race car builders at Lotus. While the boffins from across the pond have already engineered every unnecessary ounce out of the Exige in the hopes of creating a hard core driving experience, this particularly dark model focuses on making the little Lotus as sinister looking as it is lethal. The special edition Tokyo Motor Show Lotus Exige is named the Scura, which is the Italian word for dark, due to its dramatic black bodywork and a GT3 inspired rear end.

Priced at around $75,000 the Exige Scura features a trio of Phantom Black stripes to break up the large panels of matte black paint, however the carbon fiber bits and suede wrapped racing buckets go a bit further towards showing off the Scura’s true purpose of being an all out competition vehicle. Only now instead of laughing at bright orange bodywork, other drivers will stay out of this Lotus’ way. Like all Exige models the Scura is powered by a supercharged four cylinder engine that delivers a maximum output of 257 HP 174 lb-ft of torque, while it can sprint from 0 to 60 MPH in only 4 seconds and reach a top speed of 152 MPH.

Lotus Cars unveils its latest special edition – the Exige Scura, so called due to its dramatic matt black and carbon fibre theme, at the Tokyo International Motorshow on 21st of October 2009.

Translated as ‘dark’ from Italian, the name ‘Scura’ reflects the stealth character of this already fierce looking Lotus and its stunning soft-feel matt black paint finish. Limited to just 35 cars globally, this Exige evokes a desire to ‘indulge your dark side’. This is a serious looking car and enhancements to performance and a reduction in weight from the production level Exige S means that the Exige Scura demands to be driven by a serious driver.

Contrasting high gloss ‘Phantom Black’ triple stripes run the length of the car and a carbon fibre front splitter, oil cooler inlet vanes, side airscoops and rear spoiler enhance the stunning distinction between the different textures and exaggerate the tactile quality of the velvety touch to the matt black paint finish.

Luke Bennett, Director of Lotus Cars said, “The Exige Scura is a stunning vehicle which offers an adrenaline fuelled experience and is a real head-turner! Our Exige customers choose Lotus because we deliver thrilling performance and dynamic design and this special edition fits the bill on both counts.

Avoiding Vehicle Accidents With Proper Motorbike Safety

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

A motorbike can be a very dangerous piece of equipment, as all licensed bike owners should know. They require their own license to run in the United States and take part in many of the accidents you see. To avoid high insurance premiums and possible legal battles, it’s best to stay a defensive driver.

Many drivers are restricted from driving at night because of decreased visibility. Normal drivers are still safe to drive, but the decreased visibility will only work against sports bike owners who take their bike out for a spin. It’s considered dangerous unless you are within city limits and driving in areas that are well lit. Otherwise your chances at a collision are substantially higher.

Safety comes from good driving, but also safe clothing. You won’t be able to avoid all accidents, since you can’t control how others drive. But you can still increase your chances at surviving without a scratch by wearing the proper safety gear. Materials such as leather will protect against rash in coming into contact with pavement. Armor and padding will alleviate any blows that happen in a collision.

Always follow all speed limits in effect. If you are found to have disobeyed a speed limit by a marginal amount, you could be put at fault and might face a legal settlement as a result. A legal settlement in which you are the defendant could put you liable for all health costs and legal fees of the plaintiff. Essentially, you could be put thousands of dollars into debt from negligence.

The motorbike is highly susceptible to ice and “black ice.” Most are wise enough not to take their motorbikes out during the Winter, as chances of injury increase quite a bit. Motorbikes are seen mostly as an attractive secondary vehicle in areas where Winter hits hard. If you live in southern lands where Winter doesn’t yield snow, it can be more of a long term traveling solution for you instead.

If you are serious about driving your motorbike for a long period of time, you may even wish to move to an area that practices motorbike awareness. Areas with many riders give other drivers a chance to follow safe driving rules with motorbikes. In some areas where there are few bikes, you may see a higher rate of drivers who drive too close or cause accidents from inexperience.

In Conclusion

If you do happen to come into a wreck with your motorbike, you must call a vehicle accident attorney as soon as possible. If you aren’t at fault, you could win a settlement to cover your costs. If you believe you might be at fault, you will need help defending your name.
